Science Fair News
Dear Parent(s),

Blog: http://www.mrrolloblog.blogspot.com
The Mann School Science Fair is coming up on Monday, November 23, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 in the Fifth Grade Pod. The students are really excited about this event to showcase their learning from all of their hard work on the Science Fair. Students are presently working hard on their papers, poster boards, bibliographies, and Book Creator presentations. We are still holding study hall every morning at 7:20 to give students extra in-school time to work on these projects. However, students may need to finish up any last minute parts of their project at home before the Science Fair.
On Monday, November 23, students should arrive in the pod no earlier then4:50. We are also asking students to dress a little more formally since they are presenting to the community. Parents are welcome and encouraged to tour the Science Fair anytime between 5:00 and 7:00 with all students being picked up promptly at the conclusion in the Fifth Grade Pod. As always, please let Mr. Hayward or Mr. Rollo know if you have any Science Fair questions.
Thank you,
The Fifth Grade Team

Mann School is now participating in a Blanket Drive. Mrs. Sullivan is one of the community organizers and is thrilled that our Student Council has voted to have our school participate. We are joining Oak Park River Forest High School, Julian Middle School, and the local hockey teams in this Blanket Drive. A blanket of snow is coming and there will be many cold days and nights ahead for Chicago's homeless. Please help us gather new and gently used blankets of all sizes for Chicago's shelters. Help us reach Mann's goal of 150 or more blankets. Each homeroom will be making a "no sew fleece blanket" so students are active participants in this important service project. The student council generously donated the money to make this happen. Mrs. Sullivan will also offer the following dates if students want to bring two pieces of fleece (one solid and one patterned work great; use width size of ream and then get 2 yards of each) to make a blanket with her: November 16th, November 23rd, December 1,December 7, and December 8th. from 3:00 - 4:15 in the library. Please send her an email if your child will be participating on a certain day.

In the upcoming weeks, we will be going over many of the databases and online book apps that our students have installed on their iPads. To access many of these great resources, the kids will need their Oak Park Public Library cards. For 4th and 5th graders we simply ask that they take a picture with their iPad of the back of their library card (the side with the bar code). For 3rd graders, they will need to bring the card to school, so they can take a picture for their iPads.

Dear Parents,
In addition to their library card, they will also need a PIN (which is most commonly the last four digits of your phone number that you used to setup the card). It would be great if you could check to be sure the PIN works with your child's library card - if you try to login and the PIN does not work, you can reset it using the "forgot my PIN" link (see picture). If that doesn't work, a quick call to the library usually does the trick.
This may seem a lot to do at first, but once the kids get into the library, there is a world of free downloads of books and great research sources. The link below says a non-resident must pay over $400 per year for a card!
Here is a link from OPPL that specifically addresses library cards: http://oppl.org/collections-download/library-cards
Please let me know if you have any questions.

LA Assessment on Friday
Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to let you all know that our kids will have a LA assessment on Friday based on a Compare/Contrast from a story that they will read here in class. (RL 5.3)
I am completely confident that they are ready for this assessment based upon our work with the story Shilo that we read and studied here in school. If you would like to know more about Shilo and our work please ask your child.
Thanks and have a great day,
